Abstract

The Norwegian power production system has an installed capacity of about 25 000 MW, 99.2% of which is in hydro plants. New hydro power may be developed to a limited extent. Offshore gas resources amount to about 3 • 1012 standard m3, 20% of which is developed or decided developed. A strong increase is foreseen in the electricity-related use of gas from the continental shelf, both for domestic and export purposes. Following an overview of the system planning problem, the paper focuses on the central part of the planning scheme dealing with system performance modelling and evaluation. Computer programs called upon for performance analyses are grouped under two main headings: 'Energy-economy analysis' relating to normal state operation, and 'Reliability analysis' dealing with outage conditions.
