Abstract

Because of the QoS mechanisms as well as Multicast and Broadcast Services (MBS) defined in IEEE 802.16e, mobile WiMAX networks are ready to support multicast streaming services. Another important issue in such kind of services is to provide minimizing the power consumption of the mobile stations which receive and play the streams. Three types of power saving classes have been defined in IEEE 802.16e. However, they cannot well adapt to the variable delay tolerance of the multimedia streams and may cause too many redundant message exchanges. In this paper, a novel power paving mechanism, named as PDAS, is proposed to provide more efficient power consumption for the mobile stations in multicast streaming services by scheduling packet transmission according to the timing property of the given streams. The efficiency of PDAS mechanism is proved to be always equal to or better than the one of Type-II mechanism. The results of the simulations with real H.264 video segments show the actual effectiveness.
