Abstract

Power quality is an essential customer focused issue which needs to be addressed, avoiding malfunctioning of electrical equipments, linear and non-linear loads connected to the point of common coupling. The power quality at grid gets affected when we connect alternate dependant energy source, like wind energy system or any other renewable energy sources. The performance of wind turbine connected to electric grid affects the power quality and thereby it is determined on the basis of measurements and norms followed according to the guidelines given by International electro-technical Commission standard, IEC-61400. The concern issues of power quality which need to be addressed are-the active power, reactive power, variation of voltage, flicker, harmonics, power factor and electrical behavior of switching operation and these are measured according to national/international guidelines. This paper demonstrates the power quality problem due to installation of wind turbine with electric grid. The proposed scheme with best optimum results to resolve power quality problems are signify in this STATCOM control Scheme along with Battery energy storage system(BESS). In this proposed scheme Static-Compensator (STATCOM) is connected at point of common coupling(PCC) along with sinusoidal conventional energy source. This scheme also mitigate the issues of power quality when are due to non linear load, Adjustable Speed Drives (ASD), UPS system, and also improves the voltage profile along reduces Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). BESS system suppresses the issues which are caused by variation of wind power due to climatically changes in wind. The results are simulated using MATLAB/Simulink in power system block set.
