Abstract

Power quality is the main concern in the power system world. When considering grid integration with Wind power generation system, the voltage quality should be maintained in desired level. But due to high penetration of wind, the quality of power is affected largely. The main power quality issues and the role of the STATCOM in the wind farm are discussed in this paper. One of the most major issue is harmonic distortion. The role of STATCOM is to adjust the bus voltage at point of common coupling during disturbance in grid. The whole system consists of two wind farms (Induction generator type and Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator type) and STATCOM which are connected to the electrical network (power grid) through point of common coupling. A new technique for controlling the STATCOM performance is also presented here. To eliminate harmonics at point of common coupling, FFT analysis is done. Detailed modelling is done here and simulation of the designed model is done using MATLAB/SIMULINK 2016b.
