Abstract

This article presents reactive power sharing of load between series and shunt converters of unified power quality conditioner (UPQC). The series converter simultaneously alleviates voltage sag, swell, source voltage harmonics, source voltage unbalance and offers load reactive power sharing by minimizing the burden incurred on shunt converter. The shunt converter performs reactive power compensation and harmonic mitigation. Multiple adaptive noise cancellation (MANC) filters based control algorithm is utilized for extraction of supply voltage harmonics. The control is capable of identifying individual harmonics which can be further used in harmonic elimination. A power angle is obtained by using instantaneous power theory. The estimated fundamental component of the supply voltage using MANC and power angle obtained are utilized in the generation of load voltage and source current references for UPQC control. The performance of UPQC-S for various voltage, current disturbances with the adopted control is demonstrated using software tool MATLAB Simulink.
