Abstract

This paper investigates the power losses incurred in polymer optical fibers (POFs) deformed with different bend radii of curvature and elongation ratios under high-temperature conditions. A simple tensile test is conducted to calculate the average plastic-energy density (APED) in the deformed POFs. The APED provides a key index for evaluating the power loss in deformed POFs under high temperature. Based on the experimental results, a curve-fitted equation is derived to estimate the power loss in a POF for a given set of deformation and temperature conditions. The difference between the estimated results and the experimental results is found to be less than 6%
