Abstract

Power flow models for static VAR compensator (SVC) and for the static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) are presented in this paper. The SVC model incorporates both the representations - the variable shunt susceptance as well as the firing angle as the state variables. The STATCOM model is realized by representing the STATCOM as a variable voltage source with maximum and minimum voltage magnitude limits, in which the state variables are the source voltage magnitude and the phase angle. In both cases, the state variables of SVC and STATCOM are combined with the bus voltage magnitudes and the angles of the network for Newton Power flow solution. A comparative power flow study using SVC and STATCOM models is carried out on IEEE 14-Bus Test Network.
