Abstract

The use of a cylindrical stream of metallic powder is proposed to produce uniform light liners. The laser acceleration method is used to inject powder through an annular diaphragm into the gap between the anode and cathode. The conditions for shell production are discussed in detail. Shells of Al and Cu powder have been used in the water-line generators IMRI (0.8Ω, 200 kA, with a rise time of 100 nsec) and SNOP-3 (0.65Ω, 1 MA, 100 nsec). Depending on the operating conditions, the dimensions and linear densities vary over the following intervals: mass — 10–200 µg/cm, radius — 2.5–5 mm, and thickness — 0.5–2 mm. The experiment shows the high electrical conductivity of the powder shells. The radial velocity, measured by slit scanning, was 15–20 cm/µsec.
