Abstract

This work is focused on powder sintering mechanisms during the preheating procedure of electron beam additive manufacturing. We perform powder-scale thermal-fluid flow simulations to investigate the possible liquid-state sintering process, and phase field simulations to study the solid-state sintering. With validation by the post-process experimental observation of the sintered necks between powder particles, it is confirmed that the solid-state sintering is dominant in the powder sintering during the preheating procedure. The preheating temperature is critical to the solid-state sintering, which is essentially determined by the material property and influenced by the powder size.
