Abstract
Ultrasonic standing wave atomization using two sonotrodes (20 kHz) and operating with higher ambient gas pressures (up to 20 bars) allows the disintegration of fluids with high viscosity and surface tension (glass- or metalmelts) into narrow sized, extremely small droplets. This results in fine spherical powders of median volume diameters of less than 10 μm. The fundamentals of this new technique as well as its phenomena and its application in melt atomization will be described. A qualitative explanation for the flow field around the droplets on their radial and decelerated movement in the standing wave field will be given.
