Abstract

In Chapter 11 Khalid Abu-Ismail offers a study of poverty and vulnerability in Arab states. Here, he provides a critical review of the main poverty stylised facts for MENA and other developing regions based on the commonly applied global indicators of money metric and multidimensional poverty compared to an alternative set of stylised facts based on nationally defined and regionally sensitive money metric and multidimensional poverty indicators using results from household income and expenditure surveys and the Arab Multidimensional Poverty Report. When poverty measures tailored to MENA middle-income countries are applied, the region appears to have significantly higher poverty and vulnerability. The global money metric and multidimensional poverty indices are more suitable for Less Developed Countries. This calls for rethinking the conventional wisdom on poverty and economic policy in the MENA.
