Abstract

Mr. Bartram's material is not abundant and bears only very young, or old and empty, capsules, so that the peristomial characters are somewhat in doubt. The costal section figured shows a central group of small cells, and a stereid band much smaller than that figured for E. vulgaris. However, sections made of various species of Encalypta show much more variation in costal structure than the somewhat positive statement in books would imply.
