Abstract

Ceramic petrology is the study of rock and mineral inclusions in pottery fabrics. It is commonly used in studies of trade and exchange. Pottery imports can be distinguished from local products where the inclusion compositions are inconsistent with local geology. The potential sources of imported pottery may be identified where the inclusion compositions are consistent with the geology of the suspected source region. Insights into the technology of pottery production can also be gained from ceramic petrology, by identifying the raw materials and processing methods used by ancient potters.
