Abstract

This article relates the experiences of Ester Pinto Alves a Brazilian woman who was diagnosed with leprosy at age 50 years. The condition started with weakness and atrophy of muscles on the fingers. As a result these symptoms interfered with the patients job as a cook in a big school cafeteria in Brazil. Eventually as her condition worsened examinations by an orthopedic and physiotherapist were undertaken yet symptoms were not alleviated. Hence she was referred to a neurosurgeon and an array of examinations was done which are all conclusive of leprosy. After being diagnosed as such the patient expressed fear of being shunned by her family and friends; however fear resolved as soon as the doctor reassured her that the disease was not contagious and the treatment was only for about 6 months. Despite the fear and dread her faith in God remained strong.
