Abstract

Schiff bases were titrated potentiometrically with perchloric acid in nitrobenzene and their half-neutralization potentials were determined. These potentials indicated that nine- or ten-membered ring intramolecular hydrogen bonds of the OH···O type were formed in these compounds. This observation was explained in terms of the flatness of these compounds, brought about by the resonances of the three double bonds and the lone pairs of electrons present.
