Abstract

A detector for open-tubular column liquid chromatography, based on an ion-selective microelectrode cell assembly, has been used in capillaries of 14 and 3.5 ..mu..m i.d. For nonretained sample components, 10/sup 6/ theoretical plates are obtained in 220 s utilizing a column of 130 cm length (3.5 ..mu..m i.d.). This is possible only with a detector cell volume of less than or equal to6.2 x 10/sup -12/ L. The detection limit of 5 x 10/sup -7/ M iodide in a background of 10/sup -3/ M KCl leads to a minimum detectable quantity of 7.6 x 10/sup -16/ g of iodide.
