Abstract

Anodic and cathodic polarization curves were obtained for Armco iron sheets, previously annealed under hydrogen, in 1 N HCl saturated with hydrogen. The measurements were carried out with a potentiodynamic apparatus, with potential varied at 2 V/hr. The solution flowed through the measuring cell at a velocity of 1 1/min. Similar curves were obtained in the presence of 10−5 and 10−3 M phenylthiourea (PHTU), respectively. The corrosion current densities obtained from extrapolation of polarization curves are compared with those obtained from the colorimetric determination of dissolved iron. The change in slope of the Tafel lines in the presence of PHTU, with respect to those obtained in the blank test, are discussed in the light of both the results of previous experiments and the factors that may arise in the presence of PHTU.
