Abstract

Strawberry [Fragaria x ananassa Duchesne = Potentilla x ananassa (Rozier) Mabb] has accumulated a variety of viruses in its relatively short history. Strawberry crinkle virus and Strawberry mild yellow edge virus are transmitted obligately by the aphid Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell), which also occasionally infests other species of Potentilla. Several wild strawberry species have been shown previously to be hosts of the viruses. Leaves infected with these strawberry viruses were grafted into plants of UC-5, an indicator strawberry cultivar, and then UC-5 leaves were grafted into Potentilla reptans. Leaves from P. reptans were subsequently grafted back to uninfected UC-5 plants to demonstrate their potential as reservoirs for the virus. UC-5, Fragaria vesca and P. reptans plants were indexed for strawberry viruses by end-point reverse transcriptase PCR subsequent to back grafting.
