Abstract

Herbal medicine and isolated phytochemicals have been used in the traditional system of medicine for the treatment of both communicable and non-communicable diseases of human beings. Lignins are an important class of phytochemicals found to be present in the plant cell wall. Eudesmin is a natural lignin found to be present in the plants of Apiaceae, Magnoliaceae, Ochnaceae and Rutaceae family, including Aristolochia elegans, Zanthoxylum armatum, Araucaria angustifolia, Rollinia exalbida, Humbertia madagascariensis, and Mangnolia kubus. Eudesmin have a broad range of biological activities including anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-convulsant activity. The present work aim is to collect scientific information of eudesmin with respect to its medicinal importance, pharmacological activities and analytical aspects and analyzed it in order to know their therapeutic effectiveness in medicine. Scientific data of eudesmin from electronic databases Google, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus and PubMed were collected and analyzed in the present work in order to know the health beneficial aspects of eudesmin in medicine. Various terms and terminology, including medicinal plants, traditional medicine, lignin, and eudesmin were used in the present study. Analytical data of eudesmin were also collected and analyzed in the present work to know the phytochemical profile of eudesmin. Present work revealed the pharmacological activities and analytical aspects of eudesmin. Presented scientific information revealed to the anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-tumor, cytotoxicity, anti-convulsant, sedative effect, insecticidal and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of eudesmin. However eudesmin has therapeutic potential against allergic diseases, adipogenic differentiation, diabetic nephropathy, gastrointestinal motility, lung cancer, microbial transformation, neurite outgrowth, and vascular relaxation. Moreover pharmacokinetics profile and drug-drug interactions of eudesmin were also summarized in the present work. Current work also revealed the analytical aspect of eudesmin in medicine.
