Abstract

Waste materials from industrial processes can be re-used as secondary construction materials and thus replace conventional materials. The potential reuse of these materials in civil engineering depends on the physical and environmental properties of the materials in relation to the functional requirements of the sub-structures in which the materials are to be used. In addition the price and the availability of these materials, compared to those and the required quantaties of the conventional materials, are of importance. In order to determine priorities in the applications for optimal re-use of the waste materials in hydraulic engineering in the Netherlands a multi criteria analysis has been carried out, based on the physical, environmental and economical aspects of the secondary materials.
