Abstract

Obesity can be treated by inhibiting pancreatic lipase using orlistat and gout can be treated by inhibiting xanthine oxidase using allopurinol. However, commercial drugs for obesity and gout have medical side effects. Meanwhile, previous studies report that brewed cucumber mesocarp and pineapple powder have bioactive compounds that inhibit pancreatic lipase and xanthine oxidase. Therefore, in this study, an in vitro test was conducted to determine the activity of brewed pineapple powder and brewed cucumber mesocarp powder as pancreatic lipase and xanthine oxidase inhibitor, respectively. The result showed that pineapple powder obtains a yield of 10.59%, average particle diameter of 64.1 micrometer, and high content of element C, O, and mineral K. Cucumber mesocarp powder obtains a yield of 1.31%, average particle diameter of 32.307 micrometers, and high content of element C, O, and mineral K. Brewed pineapple powder encompasses of flavonoids, tannins, and saponins, while brewed cucumber mesocarp powder consists of flavonoids and tannins. The inhibitory test result showed that brewed pineapple powder has inhibition power against pancreatic lipase by 21.3% relative to orlistat. The brewed cucumber mesocarp powder test result signifies inhibitory power against xanthine oxidase by 24.18% relative to allopurinol. Therefore, brewed pineapple powder and cucumber mesocarp powder have the potential as obesity and gout alternative treatment.
