Abstract

Abstract Along Track Scanning Radiometer-I (ATSR-I) data of part of the Acre State in Brazil wereexamined with a viewto assessing their potential use for the detection of clearings within dense humid tropical forests. Using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery as a reference, a comparison of ATSR–1 and NOAA–11 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) images obtained within a day of each other indicated that the depiction of large forest clearings was better defined both spectrally and spatially on the ATSR–1 imagery than on that of the AVHRR. The reasons for these findings are discussed.
