Abstract
Two research teams have taken an important first step towards exploiting human embryonic stem (ES) cells for the treatment of neurological diseases. The teams, led by Su-Chun Zhang (University of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, USA) and Benjamin Reubinoff (Hadassah University Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel), independently report the in-vitro differentiation of ES cells into near-pure cultures of neural precursor cells (Nat Biotechnol 2001; 19: 1129–33 and 1134–40). Both groups also report successful transplantation of precursor cells into neonatal mouse brains.
