Abstract

Atrium with roof lights is becoming a common feature for commercial buildings in Hong Kong. They bring dynamic lighting to the interior, ie the daylighting level changes from moment to moment and also follows a natural diurnal variation, bright during the day and dark at night. It adds interest and rhythm to the interior space. The large amount of daylight entering the roof light can be used to illuminate the interior space so that the electrical light can be reduced. Previous work by the author showed that for a side lit cellular office the lighting energy saving could be 40% per annum. This study shows that for New Town Plaza, which has a top-lit atrium, the electrical lighting energy saving could be as much as 63% even though its average daylight factor is only 2.4%.
