Abstract
There is a considerable scope for mechanical vapour compression (MVR) open cycle heat pumps for energy conservation in ethanol distillation in India. In the proposed MVR heat pump assisted distillation scheme, a freshly treated water stream is preheated, expanded and fed to a falling film evaporator. Low pressure steam is produced by extracting heat from the overhead vapour from the rectifier. The low pressure steam thus generated is compressed and then fed to the analyser column along with the make-up steam. The temperature driving force in the falling film evaporator is optimised to its capital cost. The feed is preheated to the required temperature entirely by the sensible heat of the spent wash.
