Abstract

1. 1.Establishment of baldcypress in areas of previous habitation has been slow to develop since cessation of thermal discharges which killed the original forest. 2. 2.Baldcypress can gesminate and grow in stream habitats with water temperatures up to 42°C. 3. 3.Locations with stream temperatures above 42°C permit limited germination but survivorship is very low. 4. 4.Growth pattern and allocation into above and below-ground portion is modified by stream temperature, with less relative root biomass found in higher temperature locations. 5. 5.Establishment of baldcypress in thermal areas with water temperature up to 42°C is probably restricted by the availability of an adequate seed pool. Above 42°C, stream temperatures limit establishment. 6. 6.In post-thermal areas, cypress establishment is probably limited by biotic not abiotic factors.
