Abstract

Development of ruminant livestock requires to a stable availability of feed because feed is a determining factor for the continuity and success of businesses in livestock production The aimed of this study was to analyses the potential for beef cattle development based on the availability of forage from agricultural waste in the eastern region of West Java province. The sample locations were taken from 3 regencies based on low of population density per unit of agricultural land, namely Majalengka, Indramayu, and Ciamis Regency. Time series data on land use and agricultural waste production at the Regency’s from 2015 to 2019 were used in this research. Data analysis used LQ (location question) and IDD (carrying capacity index). The results showed that the total sub-Regency’s from 3 Regency’s was 84 sub-districts, where there were 24 sub-districts that have LQ> 1, indicates that these sub- districts were the base area for beef cattle development. Furthermore, based on the IDD analysis, all of the 24 sub-districts have IDD values > 2, which means that based on the availability of forage from agricultural land, it was in the safe category to increase of the beef cattle population. The twenty-four sub-districts in West Java Province can serve as the basis for the development of beef cattle that need to be considered by farmers and the local government, namely increasing production (especially quality forage feed even though the availability of agricultural waste is sufficient), productivity and efficiency (marketing infrastructure) supported with policy government.
