Abstract

The polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are multifaceted carriers normally formed by electrostatic interactions amid oppositely charged polyions. High biocompatibility, low toxicity, cost-effective, energy-efficient production, excellent biodegradability, and environment-friendly, makes PECs a carrier of preference for extensive multiplicity of utilizations including gene, drug, vaccine delivery, and protein-peptide. The current purpose of this book chapter is to present the discrete descriptions of PECs, mechanism(s) in the formation of PEC, structural models of the PECs, imperative interactions usually involved in the PEC formation, steps involved in the fabrication process of the PEC, critical factors that affect the PECs formation, and biomedical and nutraceutical applications of PECs.
