Abstract
In this review, the potential of biomass-based pyrolysis bio-oil for a replacement to diesel and petroleum fuel was reported. Relevant articles on the pyrolysis of agricultural wastes were consulted. The properties of the bio-oils, diesel, and petroleum were compared. It was found in the literature values that the bio-oil derived from the pyrolysis of empty fruit bunches (EFB) and wood showed a remarkable heating value of 32.60 and 32.40 MJ/kg, near to that of petrol and diesel which have 45.80 and 45.50 MJ/kg, respectively. Though, high moisture in the biooil would be a barrier to its application. It is, therefore, recommended that the moisture, ash content and other unwanted chemicals should be eliminated to improve its standard to compete with petrol and diesel. The application of biomass-based pyrolysis bio-oil in replacement to diesel and petroleum fuel could give a way to clean environment with less CO2 in the atmosphere.
