Abstract

SYNOPSIS The progressive and potential constructions are generally regarded as constructions involving the use of the deficient verb stems sa and ka respectively, or as mono‐verbal constructions in which sa and ka function as verb prefixes. An objective analysis of the situation shows that they are actually changing from deficient verb constructions into mono‐verbal constructions. The progressive construction seems to be a contraction of a construction in which the deficient verb stem sa was followed by the participial mood, as a result of the loss of the subjectival concord of the complementary verb. The potential construction seems to be a contraction of a construction in which the deficient verb stem ka was followed by the consecutive, as a result of the loss of the subjectival concord of the complementary verb.
