Potential adverse reaction from complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) containing pharmaceutical products (PP)

Abstract

Rationale CAM used by patients are not usually inquired and examined by physicians. Three immigrant patients using CAM containing PP are presented. Methods Inquiry into use of CAM as part of history taking was carried out. Detailed examination of the ingredients in each preparation was made. Results Three preparations containing PP used by patients were identified. (1) Ketelin (medication for flu and cough) capsule containing evergreen extract 360 mg and chlorpheniramine 2 mg. (2) Lemonin (medication for relief of fever, cold and pain) tablet containing paracetamol 500 mg, caffeine 30 mg and vitamin C 72 mg. (3) Tabellae Astemizoli (with Chinese translation meaning “Hismanol”)(cure for hayfever and skin allergies) tablet(Astemizole) 10 mg. The first 2 CAM without Canada's drug identification numbers were purchased from local Chinese herbal shops and the third one was brought from China. Conclusions Inquiry into and detailed examination of ingredients of CAM purchased locally or brought from overseas should be carried out. PP are noted in some preparations. There should be higher standard of regulation in Canada.
