Abstract
Abstract The tobacco veinal necrosis strain (PVYN) of potato virus Y (PVY) has been isolated from potatoes resistant to the other strains of the virus, common (PVYO) and stipple streak (PVYC). Potato cultivars susceptible to PVYN include ‘Rua’, ‘Ilam Hardy’, ‘Sebago’, and ‘Red King Edward’. The aphid, Myzus persicae, is an efficient vector of PVYN. PVYN was identified in 9% of 56 potato seed crops surveyed in 1985 and 1 % of plants tested in the laboratory. In 1988, no PVY was found. An increase in the use of pathogen-tested seed, control of vectors, and good hygiene are possible reasons for the decrease in the incidence of PVYN.
