Abstract

1. Fifteen varieties of potatoes, six early and nine late maturing, were tested for their field resistance to late blight (caused byPhytophthora infestans) and immunity from wart (caused bySynchitrium endobioticum) Among the earlies, Ultimus, Taborky and Krassava not only showed resistance to late blight but were also found to be immune from wart disease. In late maturing varieties Voran and Ackersegen showed resistance to late blight and were found to be immune from wart disease. 2. Among the earlies, Ultimus outyielded all the other varieties tested and the increase in yield was statistically significant. 3. Voran was found to be the highest yielder among late maturing varieties tested and this increase in yield was also found to be statistically significant. 4. Although, Ackersegen was outyielded by Voran it showed a much higher degree of field resistance to late blight than Voran. 5. Ultimus and Voran are considered to be superior exsting early and late varieties respectively.
