Abstract

The potato insect expert system (PIES) is a knowledge-based system for Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), management in commercial potato fields on the eastern shore of Virginia. PIES was written using VP-Expert, a rule-based expert system shell. The system uses insect life stage, potato growth stage, percentage of defoliation, and other factors to determine if an insecticide application is necessary to prevent tuber yield loss from Colorado potato beetle feeding. We compared recommendations from PIES with conventional spray thresholds based on the number of Colorado potato beetles per stem. Tuber yields were not significantly different between the 2 methods, although on average, PIES recommended 2.3 fewer insecticide applications than the conventional method. In addition, visual defoliation ratings for PIES required less time than conventional sampling for Colorado potato beetle on potato stems.
