Abstract

TEST shipments were conducted to determine the amount of shatter bruise and blackspot bruising incurred by table stock potatoes during truck and rail transportation. Shatter bruising at destination averaged 45 percent for potatoes shipped from storage and 20 percent for new potatoes shipped shortly after harvest. However, shatter bruises severe enough to cause reduction in grade averaged only 3%. Rough handling at the loading docks rather than transport stresses appear to cause most shatter bruising. Blackspot trim loss was found to be less than 1% for stored potatoes after transport and 0% for new potatoes.
