Abstract
[35444-20-3] C3H5KS3 (MW 176.35) InChI = 1S/C3H6S3.K/c1-2-6-3(4)5;/h2H2,1H3,(H,4,5);/q;+1/p-1 InChIKey = LYBYDGJWQLTRAI-UHFFFAOYSA-M (for the synthesis of trithiocarbonates) Alternative Names: potassium ethyl carbonotrithioate, carbonotrithioic acid monoethyl ester potassium salt. Physical data: yellow solid at 25 °C, mp not recorded. Solubility: soluble in water, methanol, and ethanol; insoluble in diethyl ether. Form Supplied in: bright yellow solid. Analysis of Reagent Purity: 1H NMR in D2O. Preparative Method: Potassium ethyl trithiocarbonate is prepared analogously to that of potassium ethyl xanthate: to a suspension of potassium hydroxide, anhydrous diethyl ether cooled to 0 °C is added ethanethiol dropwise, followed by dropwise addition of carbon disulfide. After stirring at 23 °C for 2 h, the resulting yellow precipitate is collected by vacuum filtration and further washed with diethyl ether before drying in vacuo. Purification: recrystallization from hot (50 °C) acetone. Handling, Storage, and Precautions: slightly hygroscopic, storage in a desiccator is recommended. Strongly malodorous, preparation of the reagent and routine reactions involving the reagent should be performed in a well-ventilated fume hood.
