Abstract

The local electronic structure of K and oxygen adsorption layers on the Si(100) 2 × 1 surface has been studied by metastable de-excitation spectroscopy (MDS). A sharp peak which is originated mainly from the K4 s states appeared just below E F in MDS spectra from K-adsorbed surfaces. The local density of the valence states exhibited a variation dependent on potassium coverage. Oxygen adsorption on a K-precovered Si surface initially induced increase of the MDS K4 s intensity, but, with prolonged exposures, reduced it rapidly down to zero. Strong correlation was observed between oxygen uptake and charge transfer from K to oxygen.
