Abstract

Georges Vigarello : Posture, space and pedagogy. The pedagogy of posture which, in the classical era, was part of good breeding, became incorporated in the 18th Century in hygienic precepts, according to which doctors preferred certain positions and profiles. It was also the object of exercises which show that the fundamental representation of the body had changed. Preventative rectification no longer used external forces on passive limbs and muscles ; the organism was now subjected to a formative activity which presupposed a self-corrective effect. The pedagogy of posture bears witness to new principles of education which were gradually to build up around the body exercises and training made up of developed programmes and reinforced normes.
