Abstract

(Int J Obstet Anes. 2022;49:103218) Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare pregnancy complication that can cause maternal stroke and death. The risk of CVST is increased in the first 6 weeks postpartum, and primarily presents as a headache with no specific characteristics. CVST may be overlooked in patients who have received neuraxial anesthesia because postdural puncture headache (PDPH) is also characterized by a headache following delivery. These 2 conditions require different management approaches, so it is important that clinicians can differentiate between the 2. Anesthetists are often involved in viewing these cases. This literature review describes the characteristics and outcomes of CVST and how to discern between the 2 complications.
