Abstract
Background and Objectives: Pulmonary complications in the postoperative periodhave similar incidence compared to cardiac complications, and contribute to high mortality and morbidity, longer hospital stay and higher financial cost. However the number of publications on the subject is smaller and its predictors are not clearly identified. The purpose of this review is to identify the main risk factors involved, and highlight the models that aim to facilitate the preoperative assessment of these predictors. Contents: The most common pulmonary complications in the postoperative period, and the most frequent risk factors related to them have been defined. From this definition two scores were analyzed to assess the risks of developing early and late pulmonary complications. Conclusions: Postoperative pulmonary complications are a marker of severity and are associated with other clinical complications. For this reason the early assessment of risk factors is an important feature of the preoperative evaluation, for the adoption of practices to decrease the pulmonary involvement.
