Abstract

IntroductionWe hypothesize that Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) is associated with a lower incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) in lower extremity amputations (LEAs), a potentially devastating complication. MethodsNSQIP database from 2011 to 2018 was queried to identify all-level LEAs. Cases using NPWT were identified. One-to-one nearest-neighbor propensity score matching was performed using a binary logistic regression on NPWT status controlling for patient comorbidities. ResultsNPWT was used in 133 of 5237 total LEAs (2.54%). Compared to propensity score-matched controls, they had significantly fewer SSIs (1.50% vs. 8.27%). ConclusionsNPWT was associated with lower incidence of SSI.
