Abstract

Using the photometric micromethod of Niesel and Thews the authors determined the oxygen fixation blood curves at 20 degrees C and at CO2 tension of 38 mm Hg in newborn piglests until 71 days post partum. The O2 affinity of the piglet blood which is high immediately after birth, decreases within the first 48h of the life and reaches an adult value at the age of 2 days, a minimum at the age of 10 days and then increases with advancing age. The difference between the adult and newborn P50 value was significant.
