Abstract

Postcolonial debate, which has been taking place since the 1980’s, affects many fields and branches of humanities and social sciences. The area of memory institutions is no exception. A range of methods as a reaction to the postcolonial turn arose in museums in order to lead these institutions towards coming to terms with the colonial past. Critical redefinition of the way colonialism and its impact had been perceived poses a rather marginal movement in the Czech environment. Postcolonial approaches leading to the decolonization of thought resonate more in contemporary art than in museum circles. Therefore, the objective of this study lies in the general introduction of postcolonial approaches among museums, followed by their use in Czech society/ Lands through the example of the Náprstek Museum.
