Abstract
As a result of excessive pigment deposition secondary to an inflammatory dermatosis, postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a common clinical entity and has a predilection for dark skin phenotypes. It is an acquired hyperpigmentation that can be caused by alterations occurring at any level in melanogenesis. Although studies have been carried out at home and abroad, litde is known about its pathogenesis. Topical tretinoin, hydroquinone, azelaic acid, kojic acid and various types of epidermal peels have shown some therapeutic effect. Recent reports also have demonstrated the efficacy of some lasers in accelerating the pigment removal, which may serve as a hot topic in future research.
