Abstract

A case of carcinosarcoma of the female genital tract detected in a cervical ThinPrep® sample is presented. Cytology showed numerous pleomorphic cells with nuclear hyperchromasia and coarsened nuclear chromatin. Nucleoli were absent or inconspicuous. The cells presented as a dispersed population with only a few small groups. The background was relatively free of blood and necrotic debris, as would be expected in a ThinPrep® sample. A report of severe dyskaryosis ?invasive was given. The cervical biopsy showed the morphological appearances and immunohistochemical profile of a carcinosarcoma. Additional ThinPrep® slides were produced from the original vial and immunocytochemistry performed. The sarcomatous element of the tumour was clearly demonstrated with the appropriate markers. This case demonstrates that carcinosarcoma should be included in the differential diagnosis when malignant cells are identified in cervical samples. Immunocytochemical staining of residual ThinPrep® material is feasible and can be beneficial in the further characterization of tumour cells. To the author's knowledge, this is the first report of carcinosarcoma of the female genital tract detected in a ThinPrep® liquid‐based cervical sample.
