Abstract

Statement of the Problem: Emergency departments and hospital trauma centers are essential U.S. health care safety nets that generally face frightening financial shortcomings due to poor service reimbursement and overutilization.1,2 Oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMFS) provide valuable manpower and technical skills for facial trauma patients presenting to both rural and metropolitan hospitals. An appreciation for the financial impact of maxillofacial trauma on hospitals is essential to respond to the recent economy and health reform dialogue. We analyzed the trends in reimbursement, payer distribution, and injury incidence for OMFS emergency patients at a regional trauma center to highlight relations between the evolving economy and patient, hospital, and provider resources.
