Abstract

Statement of the Problem: Bone morphogenic protein (BMP) is a naturally occurring protein found in the extracellular matrix of bone. Multiple BMP's have been identified and evaluated for osteoinductive potential and stimulation of osteogenesis. In 2007, BMP-2 was approved by the FDA for sinus lift and local ridge augmentation. BMP-2 is placed in a collagen carrier and secured beneath the sinus membrane after a lateral window is created in the posterior maxilla. No additional bone harvesting is necessary for sinus lift reducing operating time, donor site morbidity, and cost. Quality and quantity of bone in the posterior maxilla has been questioned for implant placement and eventual restoration. To date, no data have been published of implant viability after final restorations with long term follow up in sites with BMP-2 induced bone formation. We herein report successful placement of multiple implants after sinus lift and BMP-2 placement with long term follow up of implants after final restorations.
