Abstract

The chronic dislocation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a problem for patients as well as the oral and maxillofacial surgeons treating them. This condition can manifest itself in 2 different forms: acute or chronic, the latter requiring surgical treatment. In the last few years several surgical procedures have been indicated for the treatment of this condition: downfracture of the zygomatic arch (Dautrey's procedure), open arthroplasty or by means of arthroscopy, injection of sclerosant solutions, plication of the joint's capsule (capsulorrhaphy), miotomy, bone grafts, implants placed on or near the eminence, and eminectomy.
