Abstract

Statement of the Problem: TMJ luxation occurs when the condyle moves outside the glenoid fossa, locking anteriorly to the articular eminence. Recurrent dislocation could be due to a variety of reasons: TMJ ligaments laxity, shallow glenoid fossa, flat articular eminence, flat or short condyle and muscular spasm. Many methods have been advocated for TMJ recurrent dislocation treatment, either conservatively (intermaxillary fixation, sclerosing solutions, autologous blood transfusion or botulism toxin) or with surgical intervention. Surgical measures basically include: 1) Creation of obstruction (Dautrey procedure, bone mini-plates or grafting on articular eminence); 2) Removal of obstruction (eminectomy or high condylar shaving); or 3) Reinforcement of joint capsule. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the surgical Dautrey procedure (zygomatic arch down-fracture).
