Abstract

Statement of the Problem: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a broad category of conditions affecting the anatomical structures of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Myofascial pain associated with the TMJ involves the muscles of mastication, their tendons and the ligaments of this joint. The etiology is often multifactorial and typically is self-limiting or responsive to minimally supportive treatments including splint therapy, physical therapy, stress reduction or a short course of anti-inflammatory or muscle relaxant medications.
